Site Evaluation

Over this rotation, I had two site evaluations during which I presented two patient cases, a journal article, and ten drug cards. Both evaluations were held on Zoom with a classmate, providing a collaborative environment for learning and discussion.

The first evaluation focused on a 17-year-old patient who presented with reactive cervical lymphadenopathy and a noticeable lump on her neck. This case was particularly significant for me as it highlighted the need for thorough assessment and management of lymphadenopathy in a young patient. We implemented a treatment plan that included monitoring the lump and emphasized the importance of patient education. I learned how vital it is to communicate clearly with patients about their conditions, ensuring they understand when to seek further medical attention if the lump does not resolve. The discussion underscored how effective patient education can lead to better health outcomes and empower patients in their care.

In the second evaluation, I presented a case involving a child diagnosed with coxsackievirus. This illness often raises concerns due to its contagious nature, so it was crucial to discuss preventive measures. Alongside this case, I reviewed a journal article that investigated the use of oseltamivir, which is traditionally prescribed for influenza, and its potential efficacy in treating coxsackievirus. This exploration raised important questions about off-label medication use and the implications for treatment protocols. During our discussion, we emphasized the need for heightened awareness of contagious diseases, particularly the importance of informing pregnant women about the risks associated with coxsackievirus. This case not only broadened my understanding of infectious diseases but also reinforced the necessity of educating families about prevention and awareness in the context of contagious illnesses.

Overall, these evaluations provided valuable insights into patient management and the complexities of communication in healthcare. They emphasized the importance of integrating clinical knowledge with effective patient education to enhance patient care and outcomes.
