Self Reflection

Transitioning to my urgent care rotation was both exciting and challenging. I had always been intrigued by the fast-paced nature of urgent care, and I was eager to apply my skills in a setting that demanded quick thinking and adaptability. As I began this rotation, I was determined to make the most of the experience and grow into a more competent PA.

In my first week, I quickly found myself taking on more responsibility, particularly in explaining treatment plans to patients. This was a significant shift for me, as it allowed me to practice my communication skills and enhance my confidence in clinical decision-making. I learned the importance of clear, empathetic communication, especially in high-pressure situations where patients might feel anxious or confused. I realized that establishing a good rapport and ensuring patients understand their care is vital for their compliance and comfort. To continue improving in this area, I plan to seek feedback from my preceptors on my patient interactions and observe how seasoned providers engage with their patients.

A standout experience during my rotation was when a patient presented with chest pain. After conducting a thorough examination, I noted crackles in bilateral lung bases during lung auscultation, which led me to suspect some abnormality. Following my assessment, I reviewed the EKG and chest X-ray, which confirmed the presence of bilateral pleural effusions. I felt a sense of pride in recognizing these signs and advocating for the patient’s transfer to the emergency department for further evaluation. This encounter reinforced the importance of thorough assessments and being proactive in urgent care settings. I intend to carry this confidence into future rotations, reminding myself that careful examination and clinical intuition can make a significant difference in patient outcomes.

Another impactful moment involved a patient living with HIV who expressed feelings of shame about his condition. It was clear that he needed education about the importance of seeing a primary care provider. I took the time to discuss the benefits of regular check-ups and treatment adherence, aiming to reduce his stigma and promote a more positive outlook on his health. This experience highlighted the need for compassion and education, particularly for marginalized populations. I will strive to incorporate patient education into my practice, ensuring that all patients feel empowered and supported in managing their health.

Throughout the rotation, I also observed the delicate balance between patient satisfaction and medical integrity. The team placed a strong emphasis on appeasing patients, which was enlightening but also challenging. I learned that while it is essential to address patients’ concerns and preferences, it’s equally important to maintain the integrity of medical practice. This balance is crucial for ensuring that we provide safe, effective care while still making patients feel heard and respected. I plan to integrate this insight into my future practice by being mindful of setting realistic expectations and advocating for appropriate care.

In conclusion, my urgent care rotation was a pivotal experience that enhanced my clinical skills, reinforced the importance of patient communication, and deepened my understanding of the complexities of urgent care. I leave this rotation with a renewed commitment to compassionate care and a clearer perspective on how to navigate the challenges of patient management. I am excited to apply these lessons in my future rotations and continue my journey toward becoming a proficient and empathetic clinician.
